Strength in Solidarity: AMADA’s Efforts to Tackle Drug Abuse and Support Clean Sport Principles

A round table discussion was organized by the Azerbaijan National Anti-Doping Agency (AMADA) within the framework of the “State Program on Combating Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances, Their Precursors, and Drug Addiction for 2019–2024,” approved by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, on July 22, 2019. The event brought together official representatives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the National Central Bureau of Interpol under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health, the State Security Service, the State Border Service, the State Customs Committee, and the Food Safety Agency.

AMADA’s Executive Director, Dr. Tahmina Taghi-zada, delivered an engaging presentation, outlining the agency's responsibilities under the State Program, its achievements, and the significance of educational initiatives in fostering the sports community’s commitment to clean sport principles. Dr. Taghi-zada also highlighted the necessity of solidarity in combating drug addiction as a means to ensure a healthy society and secure the future. She emphasized AMADA’s pivotal role in the international anti-doping landscape, the efforts undertaken to preserve Azerbaijan’s sports reputation, and the progress made in establishing an independent anti-doping policy. Additionally, she underscored the importance of collaboration among state agencies and a more conscious societal engagement with these critical issues.

During the event, AMADA presented the findings of a survey on the impact and prevalence of psychoactive substance use, followed by a discussion among the participants.

Key topics discussed at the round table included enhancing cooperation between law enforcement and relevant institutions to prevent the illicit trafficking of narcotics and psychotropic substances, increasing awareness campaigns to safeguard youth from associated risks, and addressing the registration, analysis, and potential adverse effects of biologically active food supplements to protect athlete health.

In conclusion, participants stressed the need to further strengthen AMADA’s collaboration with the state institutions represented at the round table, emphasizing the critical importance of joint efforts in achieving these shared objectives.
